Chapter Music began in October 1990 when a pimply 16 year old high school student named Guy Blackman assembled his first ever fanzine, 10 pages of reviews, articles and poetry (!) cobbled together on a friend's clapped-out photocopier. It was called Chapter 24, named after a song from Pink Floyd's first album and dedicated to Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who was their first singer.
Guy released three issues of Chapter 24, and then in 1992 put together a compilation cassette of Perth bands called Bright Lights Small City. It wasn't until the following year, with the release of a Sonic Youth tribute compilation, that the label name Chapter Music was born, but Guy has always dated the beginnings of Chapter to 1990 and the first issue of Chapter 24.
In the ensuing years, Chapter went from a Perth-based cassette label to a Melbourne music institution, releasing vinyl, CDs and cassettes by bands as far flung as Tokyo, Stockholm and Connecticut.
Now, just a few months late, Guy has decided to throw a party to celebrate Chapter's 18th birthday, and invited a mind-boggling array of artists who have released music on the label to perform.
Over two stages and running all day, with a free vegetarian BBQ thrown in for good measure, Chapter's 18th Birthday takes place at the Tote Hotel on Sunday January 4 from 3pm.
The massive lineup includes:
Special Mystery Guests - a mysterious Melbourne band from the late 70s will play a special reformation gig! Don't miss your only chance to see these guys in a pub setting!
Pikelet - currently putting the finishing touches to her second album for Chapter Music, Evelyn Morris will perform her swirling, psychedelic folk music with a new full backing band. See CH59 Pikelet CD (2007).
The Crayon Fields - also about to release their second album on Chapter in the new year, The Crayon Fields are Melbourne's favourite minor key pop magicians. See CH56 Animal Bells LP/CD (2006).
Hit The Jackpot - flying in especially from Adelaide are fuzzy lo-fi sensation Hit The Jackpot. See CH60 Soul Money Gang Vibe CD (2008).
Minimum Chips - Brisbane expat moog-rock masters and early flagship Chapter artists, Min Chips will reform to play their first gig in over two years! See CH11 Minimum Chips/Molasses 7" (1995), CH16 Blip 7" (1997), CH41 Portfolio CD (2002).
Panel Of Judges - Chugging proto-pop stars Panel Of Judges' first release was a 7" single on Chapter, and they've gone from strength to strength ever since, recently releasing third album Bad Vibrations through Mistletone Records. See CH26 Blind As A Bat 7" (1999).
Clare Moore - One half of the dynamic Moore/Dave Graney duo that has anchored bands like The Moodists, The Coral Snakes and countless incarnations since, Clare released her stylish debut solo album The Third Woman on Chapter. She will perform with current collaborator Kaye Louise Patterson. See CH35 The Third Woman (2001).
Lakes - One man primal noise rock auteur, Sean Bailey is Lakes, whose debut album was released on LP and CD by Chapter. See CH52 Lakes LP/CD (2006).
Karl Smith - Vocalist and songwriter for the sadly missed Sodastream, Karl released an acclaimed solo 7" single on Chapter which made it to John Peel's Festive 50 that year. See CH19 The Sky Is Beginning To Bruise 7" (1998).
